LED Lighting – energy efficient and non-toxic

CFLs are an energy efficient option when compared with the traditional incandescent light bulbs. However  they do contain mercury which means that they need to be recycled properly. I also found the light to be quite harsh. Last year I came across an Australian website (Liquid LEDs) selling LED lights for the home.

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) bulbs are even more energy efficient than CFLs, are purported to last 100 times as long as an incandescent bulb and do not contain any toxic materials. They are more costly but in the long run I think they will work out better. I bought some last year and have been very happy with them. This year when my work moved to new offices I suggested we instal LEDs.  My colleagues have been quite happy with them too.

Unfortunately LEDs for indoor light fittings do not seem be readily available in retail shops. Recently a shop has also opened on Goodwood Rd selling LEDs (The LED Shop 670 Goodwood Road) – but it seems that they only stock downlights.
