Last Sunday afternoon, our backyard table was covered with an abundance of produce, plants and seeds from ten local gardens. Neighbours contributed oranges, lemons, tree dahlias, garlic, fennel, tree tomatoes, cabbage, warrigal greens, macadamias, parsley, sage, kefir and curry leaves, tomato seedlings, spring onions, silver beet, chicory, lettuces, honey from backyard beehives, and lots more.
Hosting a neighbourhood Share & Swap was a good opportunity to share our garden with others and swap tips and knowledge about water wise landscaping, companion planting, organic pest management, gardening with native plants and composting. We learnt from each other about different sustainable practices, shared ideas and experiences, and surplus produce found a new home instead of ending up in the compost.
Sharing and swapping with other home producers in our immediate community is an enjoyable, purposeful and meaningful activity which helps us to lower our carbon footprint and live more sustainably. Do you share and swap with your neighbours?
